Materials Processing Institute takes delivery of an experimental rolling mill adding to advanced materials research capabilities

The Materials Processing Institute has taken delivery of an experimental rolling mill which will be a key piece of equipment in our Advanced Materials Development Centre.

This rolling mill has been supplied by International Rolling Mills based in the USA. This rolling mill investment is to support client led research requirements in the Institute's Thermomechanical Treatment Laboratory in our Advanced Materials Development Centre. The rolling mill will be used to support materials analysis and development by evaluating the effect of rolling on a materials microstructure by deforming materials at a high temperature to create a wrought microstructure to help improve the materials mechanical properties.

The final phase of the installation will be in-situ commissioning and testing.

The rolling mill is being installed as part of the Materials Processing Institutes multi-million-pound investment programme in state-of-the-art machinery and equipment as part of the PRISM Programme.

PRISM is a Programme of Research and Innovation for the UK Steel and Metals sector, providing funding to support innovation in

• Decarbonisation

• Digital technologies

• Circular economy

The PRISM programme is being delivered by the Materials Processing Institute with funding provided through Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation.

This strategic expansion follows on from the recent installation of a five-tonne bogie hearth furnace which is now fully operational and adding to the Institute's technological capabilities. Additional mechanical test equipment and a press forge are also scheduled for installation, further solidifying the Institute's role as a leader in materials innovation and sustainability.
