Hydrogen bulk storage capability supports industry drive to decarbonise


The Sustainable Industry Group at the Materials Processing Institute assists industries in transitioning to low carbon fuels. As part of this client support, the Institute has made strategic investments in low carbon fuel processes and equipment that use hydrogen as their energy and enable estimates of hydrogen usage to be determined.

The first phase has been the installation of a hydrogen bulk storage facility with a monthly storage capacity of 1,666 nm3. Four hydrogen maxi packs are now stored in this facility and this service will be available from February 2024 for clients needing to utilise the hydrogen.

The facility will supply hydrogen to power equipment including preheat and reheat furnaces and a range of processes, showcasing and demonstrating how to decarbonise high carbon-emitting operations. Additionally, the data collected will provide valuable insights for partners and clients to adopt these technologies efficiently and safely.

To secure these quantities of hydrogen on-site required a review of risk and hazard management. A comprehensive risk assessment identified the necessary requirements associated with hydrogen and safe storage and operating procedures have been implemented.

The bulk storage acts as the primary foundation. Simultaneously, commissioning of the hydrogen transport and feeding network has commenced. This network will reduce the hydrogen pressure to 2 bar and distribute it to various stations requiring hydrogen. The system will incorporate state-of-the-art safety equipment, ensuring compliance with the latest regulations and standards. As necessary, the hydrogen quantities can be augmented by roughly tenfold, ranging from 1,666 nm3 to 15,500 nm3.
