Policy Priorities for Supporting Productivity and Responding to Brexit

A SPEECH DEIVERED AT THE WESTMINSTER BUSINESS FORUM

The significance of both productivity and energy to influence industrial competitiveness post Brexit, was the theme for a speech given by Chris McDonald, CEO, Materials Processing Institute at the Westminster Business Forum.

The forum aims to promote discussion on public policy, with attendees from across industry, government and academia. The focus today was on the policies required to promote competitiveness in UK manufacturing post-Brexit.

The need for the UK to start with an energy policy that will deliver competitive, low carbon energy for industry was highlighted with one potential solution to this being hydrogen, but Britain needs to move quickly to keep pace with investment in other European nations. On productivity the case was made to move from interventions that prioritise low productivity jobs growth to high productivity wealth growth.
