Mould Powder

This laboratory is used to characterise the key physio-chemical properties of slags, glasses and ashes; namely: melting properties, crystallisation properties and viscosity.

Key equipment:

  • Heating Microscope (Misura 2 HSM 1600-50)
    • Identification of thermal transition points (sintering, softening, melting, fluidity) from analysis of sample profile according to the DIN 51730 standard
    • Low resolution dilatometry (+/- 0.15%)
    • Option for controlled atmosphere
    • Maximum operating temperature: 1600 °C
    • Wettability of slags
  • Simultaneous Thermal Analysis (Netzsch STA 409 PC)
    • Combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis to measure the enthalpy and weight change during phase transitions
    • Inert and reaction gases available
    • Maximum operating temperature: 1500 °C
  • Rotational Viscometry (Bahr VIS 403 & 403/HF)
    • High temperature viscosity measurement of slags, fluxes and glasses over a selected temperature range
    • Maximum operating temperature: 1600 °C
    • Viscosity range: 1 – 107 dPas
