Institute supports International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

May 17th is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOTB). This day was created in 2004 to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex people and all other people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics.

This date was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder and every year on this date millions of people unite together in support of increasing human rights recognition for the LGBT+ community. This day provides LGBT+ people and their allies a moment to reflect on the progress made in heightening visibility of issues and furthering people’s rights.

In support, the Materials Processing Institute stands together with people from all backgrounds and advocates for equality in the workplace and around the world.

Melissa Bevington, Manager of Human Resources at the Institute commented, “The Institute wholeheartedly supports the worldwide celebration of sexual and gender diversities today to highlight the responsibilities of decision makers, leaders, law makers, businesses, and people everywhere, to ensure that the rights of people with diverse sexual orientations or gender identities are free from any form of discrimination.”

Adding, “At the Institute we strive to create an environment where people can flourish and succeed. We nurture a diverse and inclusive culture and welcome talent from anywhere and with all backgrounds and of any sexual or gender orientation. I am immensely proud that we are flying the rainbow flag and proud to work for an organisation that consider our differences as being ‘normal’.”

The core value of the Institute is ‘Integrity’ with Chris McDonald, CEO adding, “Our commitment to integrity sets our relationships with one another, our clients, suppliers, and the wider community. We have developed a culture based on integrity and mutual respect, where every colleague is valued.”

This culture is further demonstrated through the Institute’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Policy which aims for colleague to be truly representative of all sections of society and for everyone to feel respected, with Chris McDonald adding, “I am personally committed to expanding our diversity beyond traditional groups in industry and my message for anyone considering joining our team is, come as you are, and you will be welcome”.
