Principal Researcher to deliver presentation at Steel Times International event on Industry 4.0 & Steelmaking

STEEL TIMES INTERNATIONAL WEBINAR - Industry 4.0 & Steelmaking

Monday 20 September 2021,  2:00 PM - 4:00 PM BST

Alan Taylor, a Principal Researcher in the Digital Technologies Group at the Materials Processing Institute, will be joining a panel of industry experts in this Steel Times International Webinar discussing digital manufacturing and 'smart factories' in the steel industry. Alan will present the work undertaken at the Materials Processing Institute to digitise the Institute's pilot-scale Normanton Steel Plant.

The digitisation work at the Materials Processing Institute has been supported with Innovate UK funding under the InTiFi project to create an open industrial demonstrator of the application of Industry 4.0 to steel sites. The Normanton Steel Plant at the Institute, consists of a 7-tonne electric arc furnace (EAF), combined vacuum degassing and ladle furnace and a continuous caster for billets and mini slabs of up to 20m cast length.

Work at the facility has focused mainly on the casting machine, although attention was given to the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF ) and vacuum degasser for temperature monitoring of the transformer and electrode drives, together with energy monitoring. Under another project it is intended to install a digital regulator. Digitising the Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) steel analysis was also undertaken.

Installation of various sensors was undertaken for pressure, flow, temperature, and energy measurement together with live video allowing the processes to be remotely viewed during live casts.

In conjunction with upgrading the PLC ethernet network, a wireless network was installed for wireless sensor signals and to provide information to tablets for operators and process maintenance engineers.
