Chris Oswin to talk at the UK Metals Expo 2022 about digital technologies implementation to steel plants

Chris Oswin, Digital Technologies Group Manager at the Materials Processing Institute, will be speaking at the UK Metals Expo taking place at the NEC, Birmingham on 14th and 15th September 2022.

Chris will be speaking about the Application of Industrial Digital Technologies (IDTs) to Steelmaking and the adoption of these technologies particularly for operational steel plants.

The Materials Processing Institute has been supported with Innovate UK funding under the InTiFi project and the PRISM programme of research to realise a vision to create an open access industrial demonstrator of the application of Industrial Digital Technologies to a legacy steel site.

The Materials Processing Institute operates a pilot scale steelmaking plant which is unique within the UK. The steel plant main facilities at the Institute include a 7 tonne electric arc furnace (EAF), a combined vacuum degassing and ladle furnace (LAF) and a continuous caster for billets and mini slabs up to 20m cast length. The plant serves a dual purpose of being a functional production facility and a Research and Development facility for the application of new technologies. The application of IDTs to legacy plant faces many challenges not associated with newer factories. The Institute has successfully applied the various IDTs that make up the Fourth Industrial Revolution to this steel plant.

This presentation will describe the challenges of applying those technologies within a working steel plant, how they were overcome and will demonstrate the technologies applied. It will also cover how these technologies can be applied as services to support other areas of the UK metals sector and funding opportunities to do so.

UK Metals Expo 2022

The UK Metals Expo will be the first time that the entire metals industry is both represented and brought together fully under one roof. The entire metals supply chain will be represented from primary metal manufacture, supply chain management, processing metals, fabrication, surface coatings and recycling with industry experts, leading vendors and trade attendees.

Theatre themes include Supply Chains, Innovation, Skills, Circular Economy and Resources. UK Metals Expo benefits from full endorsement and collaboration from the UK Metals Council, its member trade associations and numerous other industry bodies.

Anyone with a career in the metals industry will want to attend, any organisations providing goods or services to this industry will want to be represented.
