Trade delegation finds out how the Institute is developing technologies to support industrial sustainability

Kazakhstan and the UK have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on a partnership in critical minerals, and as part of this non-binding agreement, the Department for Business and Trade is bringing to the UK a delegation of policymakers and businesses from Eastern Europe and Central Asia from March 11-15, 2024.

Over 45 people from 30 organisations involved in mineral processing and the circular economy are participating in this trade visit. The key objective of this visit is to facilitate strategic partnerships and business collaborations in the area of exploration, processing and production of critical minerals between the UK and companies from this region.

The delegation will be visiting several companies and organisations from different parts of the UK and while here in the North-East they are visiting us at the Materials Processing Institute.

During this visit to the Institute, the delegation will be seeing first-hand how our state-of the art research and technology centre is supporting materials development and process improvement. They will also see our Normanton Plant which is used to scale up and develop technologies.

Teams from the Institute will be explaining how we support sustainability in industry with our research and development capabilities and use of emerging technologies, particularly in the areas of critical minerals extraction and processing to make best use of these minerals, along with our additive manufacturing technologies and capabilities, and materials development and characterisation facilities.
