Dr Richard Birley will be a presenter at the Nuclear Manufacturing AMTecH Forum
Dr Richard Birley will be a presenter at the Nuclear Manufacturing AMTecH Forum, taking place on 29th-30th April, in Manchester.
At this event Richard will present on “Scrap Steel and the Production of RAFM Steel for Fusion”
In this presentation Richard will look at RAFM, (Reduced Activation Ferritic Martensitic Steel) which is designed for use in nuclear fusion reactors. Richard will talk about the pioneering work we have been involved with as part of the Neurone Project, which has now successfully produced the first multi-tonne UK RAFM steel. Our expertise and research capability supported the development and upscaling of RAFM steel from kilogram size production through to multi tonne production in our Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). The objective of this project is to demonstrate the UK’s capability to scale up production for advanced variants of RAFM in the future.
NEURONE is led by the UK Atomic Energy Authority working with over 70 collaborators across 12 organisations and aims to deliver scalable, fusion-grade commercial steel by 2028.
The second part of this presentation will look at scrap steel, the scale, challenges and opportunity. Richard will outline the typical scrap steel life cycle and consider the UK steel market both now and in the future, and the implications for the production of high value, precision steels economically, and with a reduced environmental impact.
