Sharing advances in powder characterisation
Nick Parry, our Group Leader of Industrial Digitalisation, attended the TCT Additive Manufacturing UK User Group Meeting where he shared recent advances in powder-characterisation science. Building on decades of metallurgical study, we now combine high-resolution laboratory methods (particle morphology, flowability, chemistry and thermodynamics) with AI-assisted data analytics to explore how subtle powder attributes influence AM build quality.
Nick was able to explain and outline:
- New in-house protocols for linking powder-state variables to porosity, density and microstructure in finished parts.
- Several first-of-their-kind techniques for multi-material and recycled-powder systems.
- How rapid, automated feature extraction is shortening alloy-development cycles and improving confidence in small sample sets.
