Dr Suresh Srinivasan doubles up with two presentations at the IRE Conference

The Institute of Refractories Engineers will be holding its annual UK Conference on Wednesday 19th November.

UK Conference 2025 - Overview

Conference: Black is the New Green – The Refractory Industry in a Changing World

• Date: Wednesday 19th November 2025 – 09:00 – 16:30

• Location: The Quays Hotel, Sheffield, United Kingdom

Here’s what Dr Suresh Srinivasan will be presenting at the conference:

Presentation 1 – 11:40 am - 12:10 pm

‘Sustainable refractories for green cement production: A comprehensive review’’

A key strategy for the global cement industry is to focus on sustainability and decarbonisation due to the CO2 emissions from this sector. To support this refractories are emerging as a vital and refractory manufacturers are developing innovative solutions.

Sustainable refractories are crucial for green cement production due to their ability to withstand the harsh cement processing conditions when using alternative fuels and raw materials, reducing the environmental impact and promoting circular economy principles. This requires key strategies for producing sustainable refractories by incorporating recycled materials, bio-based materials, optimising manufacturing processes, waste heat recovery and energy efficiency, reducing waste and emissions, and enhanced performance and durability.

This presentation reviews the latest advances on production of sustainable refractories in cement industry. It focusses on both phosphate-bonded and geopolymer refractories as alternatives to conventional refractories in cement manufacturing due to their enhanced performance and sustainability. The challenges including alkali attack and the action of clinker liquid damage and degradation mechanism of the refractory systems will also be discussed.

Presentation 2 - 16:00 pm – 16:30 pm - ‘‘High performance steel ladle refractories for high quality steel production: An overview’’

Steel ladle refractories are crucial for producing high quality steel due to technological advancement and constant change in raw materials processing conditions in steelmaking processes.

Spinel-based refractories are emerging as carbon free refractories and offers an enhanced slag resistance and improved thermo-mechanical properties for steel ladles to meet process requirements of ultra-low carbon high-quality steel production.

This presentation reviews the recent developments on Magnesium Aluminate Spinel (MAS)-based refractories prepared under various synthesis routes, microstructural, thermo-mechanical properties, and key challenges in steel ladle application. It also presents the comparison of steel ladle refractories with distinct properties and performance between MAS-based refractories, Alumina-Magnesia-Carbon (AMC) and Magnesia-Carbon (MgO-C) refractory systems.
