Scrap steel analysis
The Materials Processing Institute has been a part of the SUSTAIN initiative for several years, supporting researchers in several UK universities as they developed potential solutions to some of the core challenges for the future of responsible, sustainable steelmaking.
We’ve been delighted to be able to take forward three of those projects to pilot industrial scale in our Green Steel Centre during 2025, joining MPI’s expertise in commercialising technology and processes with SUSTAIN partners’ innovative ideas and successful proofs of concept.
Scaling up innovation to a size where it can transfer to industrial use is always a journey! We have enjoyed the opportunity to work with academic experts and researchers to demonstrate their concepts at scale. Here’s a video snapshot from one of these: a steel scrap quality improvement using smart technology to recognise contaminants.
