Scale-up research for scrap and carbon reduction

New video now live - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bj9poPJ146M
In this video, Mark Allan, Group Leader – Green Steel, shares insights into two SUSTAIN projects we’re proud to be supporting.
Project one builds on earlier work looking at how to train an AI model to recognise potential impurities in scrap steel, first highlighted in this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZiXrKzBlP8 . This research was then scaled up to our 7-tonne electric arc furnace (EAF), where we melted bundles of scrap to gain a deeper understanding of the resulting steel chemistries.
Project two, running in parallel, explored the use of carbon in electric arc steelmaking. As part of this study, we assessed how new forms of bio-carbon could replace fossil carbon in EAF processes—successfully demonstrating these concepts at scale.
This work was completed prior to our EAF being taken out of service, ahead of the ongoing installation of a new electric arc furnace in our Green Steel Centre.
For regular progress updates about this new EAF installation, follow us on LinkedIn or keep an eye on the News section of our website.
