Work on the EAF installation during the last week includes:

• The new extraction hood has been taken off to allow further alignment work to be done.

• The lifting mechanism and chains have been connected to the EAF concrete roof.

• Electrode components have been aligned to the electrodes.

Additional ongoing work has included:

• Mast alignment, a very intricate process.

• Electrical cable containment and electrical cable pulley.

• Installation of argon pipework

• Ongoing electrical installation and connection work

The above shows that significant milestones in for this Electric Arc Furnace installation have now been achieved. We are now progressing towards the completion phases with immediate work planned around hydraulic requirements, pipelines and utility integration.

Project Summary

We are investing £2.9m to replace our EAF. This seven-tonne furnace is the only research facility of its kind in the UK and plays a pivotal role in developing the technologies and processes that will enable the next generation of green steel production.

The new and upgraded EAF will provide a cutting-edge facility for developing, testing, and refining advanced green steel technologies under realistic industrial conditions. By bridging the gap between laboratory research and full-scale production, it will support the transition to scalable, sustainable, low-carbon steelmaking backed by existing secondary refining and casting capability to make almost any steel.
