Metal Recyclers get to see new Electric Arc Furnace

Today we were delighted to host the Young British Metals Recyclers (YBMR), part of the BMRA, for an in-depth visit to explore how we support the metals recycling sector.

This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the breadth of our capabilities across the recycling and wider metals industry.

A key highlight was the opportunity to see our brand-new 7-tonne Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) in the Green Steel Centre - now driving forward R&D, scale-up research, and specialist melts.

During the tour, visitors also experienced our extensive range of facilities, including:

• Air melt induction furnaces

• Vacuum induction furnace

• Ladle arc furnace

• Multi-fuel combustion furnace

• Multi-fuel bogie hearth furnace

• Top blown rotary converter

Plus, a behind-the-scenes look at our research and development capabilities supporting:

• Materials characterisation & analysis

• Materials development

• Mechanical testing

• Analytical chemistry

• Process optimisation

Cameron Leitch, Policy & Sustainability Manager at BMRA said: “YBMR had the privilege of visiting the MPI today. It was a fantastic opportunity for delegates to see a pilot steel plant at the forefront of pioneering an Electric Arc Furnace steelmaking future here in the UK. The visit also enabled discussions on the innovations that will be required across the steel value chain to support this transition.”

We are  an open-access research centre, welcoming collaborations and supporting industry innovation. if you are interested in finding out how your organisation can benefit from our expertise, or want to see the range of equipment and facilities we have, contact us at enquiries@mpiuk.com
