Mark Allan to speak at Nuclear Conference on Small Modular Reactors

Mark Allan, Green Metals & Green Steel Centre Leader at the Materials Processing Institute, will be a panel speaker at this week’s NNWI Conference:

"Powering Industrial Decarbonisation: SMRs for Materials Processing Industries”

Date: Thursday,14 May 2026

Location: London, UK

It’s not too late to book your place -

Registration: Free to attend - https://www.newnuclearwatchinstitute.org/event/powering-industrial-decarbonisation-smrs-for-materials-processing-industries

Mark will speak about the critical pathways for decarbonisation within energy-intensive industries, particularly focusing on the steel sector. He will address the pressing need to reduce CO2 emissions associated with steel production and explore the potential of low-emission energy sources and innovative technologies.

Mark’s presentation will include details about the shift towards electrified steelmaking technology, focusing on the development of commercial production processes for high recycled content steel grades which can be made with clean electricity through Electric Arc Furnaces, also detailing our work to support the scaling up of new grades of steel suitable for nuclear fusion energy devices, and the impacts of human-centred AI in steelmaking.

The conference will focus on a range of key topics, including:

• Technological Innovations in SMRs for Materials Processing

• Decarbonisation Strategies and Industrial Applications

• Policy, Economics, and Regulatory Frameworks for Industrial SMRs

• Supply Chain and Infrastructure for Industrial SMR Deployment

This conference serves as a crucial platform for industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to explore transformative innovations in sustainable heavy industries. Attendees will engage in discussions on vital topics, including decarbonisation strategies and the application of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in heavy industries, shaping the future of the sector.
