Biogas Burner System Design and Integration

Circular Economy

Requirement

The objective of this project was to design a biogas burner capable of efficiently heating a 200-litre water vessel to 65°C, utilising biogas produced from an anaerobic digestion process.

Challenge

The challenge was to design a burner that could operate reliably despite the variable composition of biogases, ensuring stable combustion and safety across a wide range of fuel qualities.

In addition to designing the burner, comprehensive guidelines for commissioning and safely running the system were provided to ensure optimal performance and operator safety.

Our Role

The creation of detailed design drawings for the biogas burner, along with specifications outlining system properties, boundaries and limitations.

The development of comprehensive commissioning guidance for the biogas burner system, along with guidance on the operation of biogas systems.

Outcome

  • The project surpassed its initial scope by delivering detailed designs for four different burners, each tailored to accommodate varying space constraints and biogas pressure feeds.
  • The designs included aerothermal calculations to design components, sub-systems and system designs.
  • This additional work enhances flexibility for clients, offering solutions that can adapt to their specific requirements.
  • Extra value was provided through the sourcing of an off-the-shelf biogas burner and retrofit recommendations.
  • This initiative broadens the options available to clients, facilitating the testing of component system design.

This project has successfully addressed the challenges of designing a biogas burner fed by an anaerobic digestion process, while also providing comprehensive guidelines and additional solutions to meet the diverse needs of customers.
